And now for something completely different …

This chair is descended from the Irish Gibson chairs, but is more directly inspired by Rudy Evert’s rendition which he describes as a mix of a Gibson and a Welsh chair, with a little George Nakashima thrown in. Not sure that I see the George Nakashima here, but the complex shape of the spindles really appealed to me. The arms on this one are not quite as chunky as Evert’s chair, and this one only has four legs. But it’s a pretty intentional copy.

This was the first piece that I’ve made from red oak, it’s relatively inexpensive and rough and ready, so perfect for a bunch of experiments. I managed to find a scorp recently, so this was the first chair that I’ve saddled using the traditional methods. It all seemed to work well. I was aiming for more of a brown finish, and used analine dye this time, but I but missed that mark and wound up with a really dark red-black finish. So the joke in the house that I’m celebrating Covid by making a bunch of black chairs.
