The playwright Anton Chekhov advised that if a gun makes an appearance in act one, it must go off by act three.

Last fall we did some pruning in the garden at the side of the house. On a whim I set aside a twisted old lilac branch. A while later I brought the branch into the shop and cut it up into legs. Of course those legs had to get used eventually.
